Three D Radio is the pure definition of “cool stuff together”. Broadcasting since 1979, it is the only major metropolitan radio broadcaster in South Australia entirely run by volunteers. Representing local artists/musicians, Three D Radio is democracy in radio form - their sound reflects what their diverse community wants.

Studio Veld were fantastic to work with on the Three D Radio website rebuild. They went above and beyond at every stage of an extremely complex project, ensuring our broadcast stream performs better than ever and that listeners can easily go back and enjoy their favourite shows for up to four weeks. They genuinely value community and are strong supporters of Adelaide businesses and organisations, which made them an ideal partner for a station like ours. Brief
 

Three D Radio’s 10-year-old website was no longer supporting their work or telling their whole story. Everything needed attention - functionality, user experience, design! They wanted their listeners to be able to stream radio without interruption and play showlists on demand. They needed an easy-to-navigate backend locked down for their core volunteer group. And it had to be built in Wordpress.

Three D Radio was looking for more than a website, they were looking for a brand new digital home to reflect their identity as Adelaide/Kaurna Yerta’s leading community radio station. A place to amplify and strengthen connections with listeners, local musicians, volunteers, and sponsors.

 
Approach


We started with the business logic, learning how a community radio station operates and zooming in on specific operational elements. Our goal was to deliver all essentials above the fold and create some backend magic to make it look simple using technical problem-solving skills.

We delivered uninterrupted Listen Live while listeners continue to browse the website unaware of the fancy script loading and reloading page parts while the tunes continue. Seamless connection with the On Demand app providing access to four weeks of past playlists, offering people the chance to choose when and where they listen.

A programming schedule with clear Now/Next states, and shows organised for discovery by day, genre, or host. Show pages bundling bios, time slots, recent episodes and tracklists so fans can catch up quickly. Episode pages with notes and timestamps for easy sharing. 

Legible type, strong contrast and tactile micro-interactions that never get in the way of tuning in. Responsive images and careful layout support the magic behind the “browse while you listen” feature.

All of this with an easy-to-navigate back end, locked down for the core volunteers among the 150 strong active volunteer group.
