I sat down with Paula Gomes, Studio Veld’s Senior Graphic & UX/UI Designer to chat about designing the user interface for the new Three D Radio - Adelaide website.
Her favourite part of the brief, “I don't want to lose all the grungey/rock/punk feelings that the station has.”
Name three things you loved about this project:
⭐ I loved listening to Three D Radio while I started to unlock the UX puzzle finding a visual wayfinding solution to such a complex website. It was like looking into the treasure box and working out how to bring all of this content to life.
⭐ I love that the new visual solution balances the density of alternative music/grunge with a gentle user interface.
⭐ I loved playing with the visual elements inspired by vinyl records (or maybe CDs). So much design opportunity.
Name 3 things that you learnt (or were reminded of) during this project:
👉 I learnt that community radio has its own unique place in the world of UI/UX design, with different needs and functions.
👉 I spent a lot of time listening to radio shows and learning about the people. Their thoughts, their gentleness, their interests. I learnt that community radio is not just about the songs you hear, it’s about the hosts and the off-air volunteers - all of this intelligence coming together.
👉 I learnt that community radio is a place for expression.
What are you most proud of?
⭐ I feel so proud of giving Three D Radio listeners the delightful experience they deserve. Of bringing together all of the station’s uniqueness and personality in a way that works so smoothly.
